Lutoslawski Little Suite
Mozart Piano Concerto No. 20 in C (Elvira Madigan) Soloist – Robert Thompson
Sibelius Symphony No. 1 in E minor
An eclectic programme in which brilliant new generation pianist Robert Thompson plays one of the most popular of Mozart’s concertos for his instrument – relaxed and confident, bright and joyous, its dreamlike slow movement was the star of the 1967 Swedish film Elvira Madigan. To start, a luminous setting of four jaunty Polish folksongs, penned by Lutoslawski in the midst of the Soviet repression. To finish, arguably the first significant work from Northern Europe. Sibelius said ‘music begins where the world leaves off’, and his first symphony – Russian in its indulgent dramatic statements, yet Slavic in its poignant melodies of peasant energy – wears its heart on its sleeve, and has an overwhelming emotional impact.
