Schubert Overture in the Italian Style
Butterworth Banks of Green Willow
Strauss Oboe Concerto Soloist – Louise Sprekelsen
Vaughan Williams Fantasia on Greensleeves
Beethoven Symphony No. 2 in D
Inspired by a chance meeting with an American GI who was principal oboist in Pittsburg’s orchestra, Strauss’ late concerto offers richly talented Louise Sprekelsen countless beguiling melodies. Music by Butterworth and Vaughan Williams, both of whom drew from their discoveries in English folksong, is also featured, whilst the concert is framed by two Viennese classics – Schubert’s ‘wonderously lovely overture’ and Beethoven’s response to increasing deafness in a symphony whose humour, power, joy and depth seems to have impressed and baffled his contemporaries in equal measure.
