Rebecca McNaught 2015 winner:
Winning the Gloucestershire Young Musician of the Year has brought cellist Rebecca McNaught opportunities she’d never dreamed of.
The former Pates Grammar School pupil said: “The recital in the Cheltenham Music Festival was one of the biggest opportunities I’ve ever had, and I’m really excited about the upcoming concerto performances with the Gloucestershire Symphony Orchestra in Gloucester Cathedral on November 14 and the county youth orchestra later in the season.
‘Winning Gloucestershire Young Musician has always been an ambition of mine but what makes the competition special is the relaxed, concert atmosphere at the final, giving all the performers the chance to perform at their best. It was fantastic to receive feedback and praise from such a prestigious adjudicating panel which is really motivating as a young performer.”
Rebecca, 19, who is studying music at Oxford University, is encouraging other young musicians to enter the 2016 contest which launched on October 1.
Last year, a record entry of 22 young musicians competed for the coveted title and organisers Gloucestershire Symphony Orchestra are hoping for an even greater number this year. They took over running the contest last year and are supported by partners Cheltenham Music Festival, the Gloucester Academy of Music, the Carducci String Quartet and Gloucestershire Music. The event is sponsored by Steve Godsell, franchisee of CJ Hole Estate Agents in Gloucester and Hucclecote.
Steve said: “We are totally sold on the success of this year with outstanding music and amazing support. Gloucestershire has a great young musician winner in Rebecca McNaught and we are looking forward to the next competition.”
