There’s a subtle nod to the coronation in GSO’s Summer Concert programme, which features the beautiful Overture ‘Proud Thames’ by English composer Elizabeth Maconchy. Premiered at the Royal Festival Hall in 1953, it was originally entered for London County Council’s contest for a piece to celebrate the forthcoming coronation of Elizabeth II. A shame it doesn’t figure on her son’s list!
The concert, staged at Gloucester’s St Barnabas’ Church on Saturday June 17, 7.30pm, features GSO clarinettist Katy Wenham performing Copland’s Clarinet Concerto, also premiered in the early 1950s, as well as Tchaikovsky’s much-loved 5th Symphony.
